62

Well guys, girls and non-binary folk. It is officially 62 days until another Fresher's week. A week dedicated to young Freshlings who awkwardly wonder around the campus, drink far too much and struggle with the basic element of cooking. I remember when I was a Freshling all of those years ago (September 2014). Back in my day , there was sticky floors, my best friend being conked on the head by my other best friend, a trip to Liquid and Envy where a fight broke out whilst we were drinking WKDs and a singalong of the Pokémon Theme Tune on 13teen. In some ways, things haven't changed. The Fleshlings are still tagging each other in nights out. We still have to remind the students that they need to eat decent food and actually rest their livers and the marketing materials still say that it will be the best week of their lives. I personally think that Fresher's is like a fine wine, it gets better with age and experience. Now I'm going to be paid to pass on my experience...

Name changes and why I HATE football fans!

Well, a lot has changed since my last blog entry. Firstly, I have 0 intention to top myself (praise the lord) and I've now got a job! I'm also no longer the DSU's Postgraduate officer as I officially left that post on Friday which means I'm probally going to need to work out how to change my blog title. That being said, I'm not leaving the SU just yet. I'm happy to announce that I am one of the new Student Champions until December. In short, it's doing the work of a FTO but without any form of manifesto. It's a bit odd on paper but in practically it means that I'll be working events like Open Day, Fresher's Weeks, Clearing, etc. meetings loads of old and new students and getting £10 an hour. It's also super flexible which means that I can still finish off my MA and earn money to travel afterwards. Consider this blog now, 'confessions of a Student Champion' until further notice. I am now looking around to decided exactly I want to ...

Guess who's back.

Trigger Warning: Suicide, Mental Health, Self Harm , Just over 2 months since I last reported what I have been up to. I'll be honest, I've not really been doing too much since my last entry. I went to the NUS sections conference (or as I like to call it, 8 hours of radicalisation in Manchester) and then I kinda went AWOL. For those of you who have been following this blog from the beginning, you will know that I have had all sorts of weird and wonderful (and I use wonderful very loosely) adventures with my crappy mental health. I have also been quite open in admitting that there have been times that I've had deep dark thoughts but never really acted on them. This changed last month, when I attempted suicide via an overdose of my anti-depressants. I was then admitted to Leicester Royal Infirmary (#ILoveOurNHS) and have since been on 24 hour supervision (and if not 24, pretty god damn close). In short, it meant that I couldn't do as many things as I wanted to for...

Stop shooting me Arty!

There was only one rule in that game "don't shoot your teammates." It wasn't as even as if we all looked the same or were hard to spot, we were all wearing white t-shirts. White in the UV light is a giant siren saying 'shoot me. Shoot me right here.' Yet some how, Arty still managed it, not once, not twice but at least 20 times (that's of course assuming that he actually shot the other team at some point during the 15 minutes). Needless to say, he wasn't very popular after that game of laser tag.  So why was Arty shooting the wrong team anyway I hear you cry. Well yesterday was the 'faculty-laser tag challenge' where the 6 faculties competed in a variety of activities for fame, glory and bragging rights. There's also something about students and staff having a good time but let's face it, we're too concerned about winning.  Laser-tag pic. As there were only 2 people from ADH that came last night (myself incl...

Let's all have some wine and let this blow over.

Well folks, I need a cuddle, some wine, a good night's sleep and a big bar of Dairy Milk. For those of you who've been following my blog recently will now that today was the day of our emergency council. I knew that students were upset about the elections however I don't think any of us were expecting the whole lecture theatre to be packed. Moments like this make me proud to be an officer as all of our goals are to make sure that you guys have a voice on the table. Some of our amazing student body.  Naturally when you are dealing with something as big as the DSU election, it's going to be tense. It's always the case whatever the ballot because power always brings out the worst in people. That being said, there is 0 excuse for what went down earlier. DMU always prides itself on being a diverse community, one of the things I love about it is that it doesn't matter your race, sexuality, gender, if you're disabled, where you live, you are judged on y...

The great pisshead pandemic.

Hello again folks, The law of dietdom states, that for every diet, one must better themselves at the gym to assist with said weightloss. Jessica and I started this law today as we both joined Pure Gym. After this, we went to the local Chinese shop to find that students have been flytipping outside of the shop (to said students, don't be dicks. The man does fantastic sweet chilli sauce). So now as I sit in my bed on a Saturday night, sober. I think about DMU's current drink culture and how we need to prepare for the changes to come. For me, the culture began when I was a mere freshling 4 years ago. Before I came to Uni, I only ever got drunk once on my 18th. Clubbing wasn't really my thing (to be fair, Melton didn't have the best clubbing options) and I'd be quite content with a glass of bucks fizz at Christmas. When I first started University, you were seen as weird if you didn't drink. Shows like The Secret Life of Fresher's would depict Fresher...

Another day, another lack of dollar.

I'm back, and may I say I feel better than ever. For starters, I have now given up my dependence on Dominoes and have instead decided to join Weight Watchers. I am currently on day 4 of the 'diet' so we'll see if it's worth the money come Sunday on weigh in day. As for officer stuff, I decided to be an organised chicken and have lots of different coloured sticky notes on my computer. Just make you guys aware, I have to plan the following before I leave: 2 networks minimum. 1 conference. 1-2 events for Fresher's Week 1 handover document for my successor. Needless to say I have been a very busy monkey and plan to continue being busy until June 30th when I hang up my officer hat for good.  So it with that I leave you for today folks. I want to try baked apples with maple syrup.
