We danced all night to the best Freshers ever!

It's day 5 of #Freshfest17. Where has the time gone? Of course, it's not Freshers without the compulsory hangover as I'm finding out today.  Yesterday, I began my day by welcoming new students at their matriculation ceremony. You see alongside my officer stuff, I am also the chair for SCUBA so the committee is tasked with recruiting the youth. This recruitment drive turned into us breaking the record for the most people in one matriculation photo. #SquadGoals To those doing today's matriculation ceremonies, I count that we got 26 people in this photo. Your challenge is to beat that number. If you do, tweet me @DSU_PG and I will retweet any photos that break our record. So when I wasn't doing matriculation, I partook in the Big Fat Love Leicester quiz. Team, Quiztina Agularia did very well in the Leicester and music rounds, however, the sports round was ultimately our downfall and therefore, we did not succeed in winning the free food. This was a grave sha...

The devils wear DSU Tops

I'm a naughty Postgrad officer. In my defense, I wasn't the only guilty party and it wasn't intentional. If you don't know already, we are currently in the middle of our Freshers week. A whole week dedicated to welcoming the new blood and making sure that they get all that partying juice out of their system. After his presidency Arty is going to be modeling for Tesco and Asda. We sold raffle tickets where the winner gets a nice bundle from Supplies worth £200.  We also gave out lots of wristbands, t-shirts and tickets for nights out. We also had our welcome weekend, which I unfortunately missed due to employment. Yesterday was the night that is often spoken about in student land. The fresher's ball. Firstly, I never understood why they called it a ball. There's no gowns or suits for that matter. The more accurate name is (insert famous act here) live at DMU. Now, me and Fresher's Ball never used to be a thing. After a particular traumatic expe...

T minus 1 day till #Freshfest17

Well, it's now officalially 1 day until #Freshfest17. The office is a giant stressfest as we do some last minute preperations ready to release the first batch of new blood that will be arriving tommorow. Because of this, I am going to do the timeless tradition of my 'must sees' ready for Freshers Week. So sit back, relax and see just what you are letting yourself in for. Firstly, let's begin with a little throwback to last year's Freshfest to give you guys a sneak peak of all the action. Now for this year's must dos. For those who drink: The fresher's ball (Sunday 24 September: 9pm - 2:30am ). The Fresher's Ball is always known for being one of the big highlights of Fresher's week. This year the headline is the very smexy (in my personal opinion) Tom Zanetti. Zanetti is making a big name for himself throughout the dance world with hit tracks like 'You want me' and 'More and More'. He is going to be teaming up with KO...

Turn the music up louder.

There is some good news in the office! Well, I say it's good but I'm pretty sure my bank balance is going to disagree with me There are Krispy Kremes in the SU and may I add that they are very, very good. Food aside, last night was our international students karaoke. This is where our international students get to take part in the popular tradition of drinking lots of beverages and then making themselves look daft whilst someone records it for future blackmail. Usaid got the ball rolling with a few of the attendees (when I say get the ball rolling, I mean look a plonker first so that the rest of us feel better about ourselves and sign up). Usaid murdering 'All Star' I then decided after 2 JD & Cokes that I was going to be the 6th members of Steps (if you guys want me to come on tour, let me know and I'll block it out of my calendar). Arty and Derrick also decided to have a sing song and killed Bruno Mars, although their attempt of 'Same G...

Welcome to UK, international folk

Well, once again I am shattered. This seems to be a regular occurrence whenever I do something officer related but I wouldn't change a thing. Ok I lie, I would prefer to have at least another 6 weeks to do some research for a report that I need to submit to the University's big wigs but we can't have it all, can we? I shall explain more about this report in a future entry, all you need to know at the moment is that I'm hoping that it will make DMU even more enticing for international students who live outside of the EU. Speaking of international students, today I was table hosting for the International Welcome event. A huge spectacle with fairground games and a selfie mirror which was followed by a variety of speeches from various important folk before a buffet with twists on traditional British foods. I was slightly disappointed by the lack of drunken kebab but I also understand the practical reasoning behind the lack of dish. Look at that face. Whilst we we...

That happy accident

Don't you just love it when things don't turn out the way you planned them? For me, I usually hate such a scenario, however, when it gives you your first win of the year, I can be slightly more tolerant. It all began with an innocent tweet to the VC saying that it would be great to have students feature their writing on the Vijay Petally. Seems sweet enough, doesn't it? Well, there was a fierce debate about what is DMU's 'look' and this ultimately concluded with the VC announcing that he is going to put more poems on the patelly both of students and other poets. Am I shocked, hell yes.Am I proud that humanities are showing off more, feck yes! This will be my 4th year as part of the school of humanities and I'm so happy that there's now an element of recognition for events like Open Day.  So when I wasn't debating with the VC, I also did other things. The biggest one being the shaping of my #GetInvolved Campaign. The goal is to get at least 35 pos...

And so New to DMU 2017 is over...

Well, it is over. The Aspies have gone home and I am now back in Melton writing my last entry on the event.  The last 3 days have been some of the most fantastic 3 days since I have been at DMU and the memories I will take away from this week will last until I am old and wrinkly. Since I finished yesterday's entry, I took 8 Aspies on a bar tour of Leicester. There was plenty of drinking games during the evening including several rounds of 'the floor is lava' which got increasingly inventive as the night went on including the change of the word 'lava' to the words 'social interaction'. We also introduced the 'Alexandra Burke of Power' which was essentially how we decided who was the question master during the evening. This then lead to the rule that every sentance must end with the name of the powerful X-Factor winner. Alexandra Burke, the bane of our bar-crawl. For the first 2 bars, we must have only had a couple of pints tops. However, w...

Day 2: The pizza, the wookie and the 500%+ accuracy.

Well, I'm on break before tonight's shift and having a tactical break before tonight's events.I was on shift from 1pm this afternoon and after lunch (cheers DAS for the free food), we took out groups on the Scaverger hunt. What started as a innoscent journey around Leicester turned into the Aspies first encounter with the local Leicester wildlife. When I say wildlife, I really mean the wierd man who started to get into an argument with a couple at the clock tower.  After this wonderful adventure, it was the highlight of the day. LASERTAG. After splitting into teams, we were all out with our guns and I can proudly say that in my first game I came 5th out of 32 people (however I was a wally and forgot to take photographs of this success). The second game however had something very interesting.  Now, one of these things is not like the other. Have a little gander at the accuracy for Morgan and I'll give a prize to whoever spots what is wrong....

Day one of the madhouse

Well. I'm tucked up in bed right now with about 3 glasses of water using every last muscle to type this entry. Not because I'm ill but rather is a duel between tiredness and a sugar coma (and I still don't know which is which). Today was the first day of New to DMU 2017. Some of you might remember my entry where I spoke about it (if not you can read about it here ) so I won't go into the full ins and outs about what it but rather what I got up to. At half past 9, myself and 6 other ambassadors were instructed to guide 30 aspies and their parents to a room in Hawthorn. The catch? None of us was HLS students and Hawthorn is the DMU equivalent of a Labrinth with more corridors than a Harry Potter dorm. Needless to say what seemed a simple task turned into a full operation. After this, I was with the parents settling any worries that they may have. I then had to explain to 60 odd nervous parents and Leanne exactly what a dirty pint was. Clearly, I, have been subjected...

Previously on officer land...

Hello, I apologise for my lack of online presence recently. I have been very busy with stuff both officer stuff and chair stuff. Firstly, I have officially enrolled on my masters course and chose my modules for this year which is very exciting. Tommorow, I will start my first day of New to DMU. It is very exciting to see the new blood wonder in all bright eyed and bushy tailed before the impending dread of all nighters, drinking and stress. Of course, it's not socially acceptable to tell them this so we have to smile nicely and not warn the of the impending doom. I also had a disciplinary meeting so that I now have full understanding of what will happen when I get invited to a panel. I apologise if today's entry is slightly sort, I am slightly sleepy and am having an early night ready for tomorrow. Until then toddle pips, Kelly
