United we stand

I'm a very tired officer. It's true, being an officer is physically exhausting and it doesn't help that I have no clue what is going on in my classes. So what have I been doing today (apart from crying over my literature review)? Well, I stopped by the Student's Union for Jess' 'Big celebration' which was an event to celebrate the conclusion of her Black History Month events. There was lots of music, dancing, mingling and most importantly FOOD! I rate this spread a 9/10. The complementary Irn-Bru was a nice surprise. Of course, as officers, we have to check that Jess isn't trying to kill the student body off. It was a tough job but somebody has to do it. When I wasn't scoffing my face, I was sitting in about 70 different meetings about my role and how the union should be restructured  (Cough. Make a full-time PG officer. Cough, Cough. It's common amongst a lot of unions. Cough cough. I can't sort this all out on 2-3 hours a week...

Me f****d up

There comes a time where you have to admit you are wrong. For me, that is today. You see I had an epithany. A realisation if you will that what I was wanting to do wasn't what the postgraduates needed. Whilst I was thinking about how to get them involved with elections, they were wanting to go on Global. So I decided that I now need to steer my boat into global waters and I may have just taken the biggest risk ever. If it works, I could have something very big in the pipeline. So until tommorow folks, Toodle pips.

There's a pretty sun...

So yesterday the UK was introduced to a red sun. Apparently science said this was because of dust particles that have been brought over thanks to  hurricane Ophelia. This meant the sky was very trippy and then sun looked like this... With thanks to DMU TECH ( original photo can be found at https://twitter.com/DMUTECH/status/919884106439196674).  Apart from watching the pretty sun, I was able to participate in Arty's scrutiny panel. Aka, 10 people ripping apart everything he had done, limb from limb and expecting him to defend the lot. I shall give credit where it is due and say that Arty answered his questions very well. I shall comment on Derrick's efforts after Friday, where I too shall rip apart his report from limb to limb.  When I haven't been an officer, I have been doing my masters and crying in the meantime. I shall let you know if I get up to more frollics. Until then, Toodle pips, Kelly

The difference between masters and undergrad.

Howdy ho folks, It's week 2 of masters land and I am already lost. You see undergrad and postgrad are 2 different demons. Undergrad, you have separate lecturers for different modules. So when it comes to thinks like additional reading, you can remember what reading you were supposed to have read because you asscociate an article with a particular lecturer. Also the modules didn't really mix, the best you got was a 'oh this is building on from last year.' Postgrad meanwhile, is a melting pot. Different modules are start murging together and I'm pretty sure I see some lecturers more than I see my mother (we daily facetime for about half an hour). Whilst the same lecturer for lots of classes has its perks (them being able to get to know you, correct names by day 2, etc.), it doesn't half bloody confuse me when the lecturers ask us if we've done the reading. Hence 27 MA students all replying back with 'which one.' It's also far more challengi...

Do a MA they said...

Well, I am 2 days into my MA and regretting the decision to pay £5000. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy the course. Sociolinguistics is really interesting and I loved learning about the evolution of words over the last 1200 years and the teaching theory I'm learning is going to give me a heads up when I apply for my teacher training. However, there has to be a nicer form of bedtime reading for tomorrow's class and I'd like more than 1 week a term where I don't have a deadline after week 6. A wise man once said that if something was easy, everyone would have it. Apparently, only 5-7% of people in the UK have a masters degree which shows that regardless of what people say, they are not easy. It is that reason why I came home and started to research my essay that's due in December and is worth 60% of the module. It's also why I'm reading two chapters ready for 9:30 tomorrow so that I give myself as much of a head's start as possible. In terms o...

The impossible happened

It finally happened! I can't talk. The best I can do is a slightly irate croak and I'm living off good old Lemsip. Yes, the long days, free alcohol, late nights and pizza have finally caught up with me and I'm the latest victim of the Freshers Flu. In fact, I'm pretty sure, this is the worst Freshers Flu in my 4 years of study (I blame the vodka). Since I last wrote my blog entry, a lot has happened. Firstly, I had my cake walk with Louise which went well, for the most part. Now this event was designed for MATURE AND/OR POSTGRADUATE students. This means that the youngest person, in theory, would be 21. Clearly, DMU have some gifted and talented folks, because we had one particular gentleman who was under 18. This gentleman was then higher than the Empire State before leaving the group because he didn't read the memo that we were going to be walking in Leicester before the cake (cough, clearly there for the munchies, cough, cough). Me and the Richard III Cent...
