Well folks,
I need a cuddle, some wine, a good night's sleep and a big bar of Dairy Milk.
For those of you who've been following my blog recently will now that today was the day of our emergency council. I knew that students were upset about the elections however I don't think any of us were expecting the whole lecture theatre to be packed. Moments like this make me proud to be an officer as all of our goals are to make sure that you guys have a voice on the table.
Naturally when you are dealing with something as big as the DSU election, it's going to be tense. It's always the case whatever the ballot because power always brings out the worst in people. That being said, there is 0 excuse for what went down earlier. DMU always prides itself on being a diverse community, one of the things I love about it is that it doesn't matter your race, sexuality, gender, if you're disabled, where you live, you are judged on your character and your skills. Therefore when there were accusations of racism, then there is a serious issue.
Racism, especially in today's modern climate is a big deal. There are people afraid to leave their houses out of fear of violent attacks, there are people worried about going on holiday because they're scared they won't get back home, there are far right hate groups hating people just because of how they pray to the same god as them. So what it is thrown around in a council of diverse students with little to no evidence given in an attempt to justify somebody's problems, it's not ok. In fact, if it was up to me, I'd ask for your evidence and if you couldn't produce it, stop your rear from speaking and remove you from the room on the grounds of slander and character defamation.
No minority card should be used if you are losing an argument and you're in the wrong. Plain and simple. In exchange, nobody should use a characteristic in an argument and if you have evidence of discrimination, by all means report that shit and provide evidence if somebody attempts to challenge it (screenshots, emails, voice recording, videos, witnesses, etc.) but at the same time, don't say that somebody is being discriminatory because they disagree. We're in the 21st Century folks, we are better than this!
For all of the officers now, old and new, our job will be to regain the student's trust. Repair the damage that these elections have caused and work with our amazing students to make election rules that will be followed and stuck to. That way, nothing like this will ever happen again! It might take a long time but I know that if we all do our bit and work hard enough, then faith will be restored and folks will come back to the SU.
On that note folks, I'm off to bed because I'm shattered physically and mentally.
Until next time folks,
Toodle pips,
Kelly Davies
