An idiot's guide to the DSU (a reference guide for everyone else).

There are alot of people who haven't heard of the SU. There is a bigger group of people who think it's just a bar. I'm here to put the records straight, consider this your one stop tour of all things SU.

So the DSU is made up of 4 sections. Each of these sections are designed to make every student here at DMU have the time of their lives. These sections are as follows:

  • Voice
  • Support
  • Life
  • Activities.

Now, for some peoples, that would ring some bells but allow me to expand for those new peoples.

Voice:

Voice is pretty self-explanatory, it's all the things that allow you as students to use your voice. This department covers the following:
  • Councils and AGMs: These allow you to suggest, debate and vote on important policies that shape the very by-laws that everyone must follow from students to officers. It's also a chance to see what we are doing and ask us any questions you may have.
Due to the amount of debating, I now have a tradition that I bring some popcorn with me. Just incase things get exciting.
  • Campaigns: From disability awareness to housing, there are alot of campaigns that will happen this year (otherwise we're doing a crap job) and somebody has to help us put these all together.
  • Representation: From your officer team to all 650+ course reps, we all have the job to make your life better at DMU and voicing any concerns that you may have. It's a tough job but we have a team of nice people in the office that make it easier.
  • Officers: Contrary to what some people say, we all got voted into our roles. Every single one of us had to compete for our roles and all of us ran in the elections week which is probally the most stressful and painful experience during my degree, however it's so worth it because you make so many friends and the skills you gain are amazing.

Activites:

Activities is pretty simple. It's all the extra-ciricular stuff, the CV builders and the friendship creators. These are the people that you'll be going to socials with and the people that will build you up when you feel down. There's 4 different types of activities you can get involved in during your time at DMU.

  • Societies: We have over 100 societies here at the DSU. From Airsoft to Zumba, Creative Writing to Street Law. There is lots of different activities you can get involved in and if you don't see anything you like, visit the activities office and set a new society up.

  • Sports Clubs: There's lots of differents sports you can get involved with from your traditional sports like Rugby and Hockey to more unique sports like Lacrosse, Scuba Diving and Canoeing.
  • Demon Media: Demon Media is our student led media platform. Whether you want to star in front of the camera or want to run your own radio show, you can do it all with Demon Media.
  • Voluenteering: From committee roles to helping the children. Getting women to check their boobs to RAG week. If you have a passion for helping others then this is perfect for you.

 Support:

This is the section dedicated to making sure that you were ok. From immigration advice to housing, our free advice team is able to help you out with all of your queries.Things that come under this section include:
  • Advice: Whether it's immigration or defferals, our award winning Advice team are able to help you with any issue that are preventing you from getting the best out of the university. It's free, impartial and non-judgemental.
  • Student Sexual Health and Choices: Choices is our sexual health clinic ran for students by students. You can be tested, get your condom card or discuss contraception methods. You won't have any form of judgement when you're there.
  • My Unipal: Are you a Freshling who has 0 idea what they are doing? Relax, then sign up to My Unipal. A fantastic service where you are matched up to a 2nd/3rd year student who knows the ropes. They will be able to advise you on everything from how to get an extension to what activities would suit you best. Consider it like Match.com for mentoring.
 Life:
Life is life. It's every other service that we provide to make you're student experience amazing. This includes:
  • Supplies: Our offfical SU shop has everything from pens to your offical hoodies. Best bit, every penny you spend goes back into YOUR SU.
  • Milly Lane's: Our unique eatery sell everything from vegan salads to your full English. Perfect for when you're recovering from a heavy night.
  • Sulets: The only estate agent reccomended by the DSU. Whether you want a house with 10 of your mates or a studio to yourself, these people will be able to help you out.
  • The Tech Shop: Whether you need a new phone charger or your laptop decided to die a month before disso hand in. The tech shop are able to help you with all your tech worries and they're on campus. :-)
  • Days out: From Harry Potter world to Leicester Tigers. We have a variety of days out throughout the year that you can partake in and they're normally cheaper than the on the gate prices.
  • Injunction: Our Wednesday social venue (or the bar).

So as you can see, there is more to the DSU then a bar. So the question is now, how are you going to get involved?

Until you've decided,

toodle pips,

Kelly.
