Ah 2017. A year where you can order your alcohol, taxi to the club, your taxi home and your drunk food in a couple of taps. A time where make-up mogels make millions from a photo of a lipstick and we can tweet about what we're doing there and then.
As a new officer, I am very dependent on social media. For heaven's sake, my only real way to currently explain what I've been doing is via this blog which I argue was one of the original forms of social media. It's quick, easy and more importanly convinient.
I don't need to search every single Student Union in the county to see if they have a postgrad officer because we're all part of a facebook group. I don't need to repeat myself to the 11 other officers if there's something important because I can just put it on a group chat.
Gelato dates can be established in a couple of glorious tweets. A meeting can be established over a facebook chat and a simple, 'hey would you like to come over and visit sometime?' saves the whole awkard issue of stalking a person just to see if they want to visit your TEF Gold university whilst you get some words of wisdom.
However the problem with social media is that you are under scrutiny from that first moment your name is out there. Because of this, I feel that there is a slight fear that I might not do enough or that I don't react quick enough.
For instance, there was an issue with one person who I will call Bill. Bill was a postgrad doing a masters and he had some issues with the teaching on the course. How did I know about Bill? Via Facebook. I've message Bill, mainly to see if there's anything that I can do now to help, however the reality is, I'm probally going to be too late to help him. That doesn't mean I won't bloody try but if I was the postgrad officer in let's say January, then poor Bill wouldn't have to had endured this for an additional 6 months. I can just hope in my role that I can help several other Bills and if you feel like you are a Bill, please come forward and tell me.
So what do I have planned for this week? Well I'm meeting Louise tommorow to start planning our little lounge and cake walk which is super exciting. I'm then meeting Jess and Mollie on Tuesday for ice-cream (because bonding is fun and when you do it with food, it's even better). On Wednesday, I'm doing the online chat which will be a very exciting experience to add to my ever growing CV.
So I shall look forward to explaining mine and Louise's plans tommorow.
Toodle pips,
Kelly
