#NotMyDSU

Wow. What a weekend!

Since Friday night, I have been part of 2 protests, 1 occupation, 1 petition and we're not even a week in yet.

Ok. So let me rewind it back for you all. I briefly mentioned last week that there was an election. I say briefly because I wasn't allowed to go into the full details due to purdah. Now purdah is over, it's open hunting season. So I ran to be the Union's next VP Student Activities, because I loved representing you guys this year and I want to get more groups involved in the SU. I also wanted to help sports out because they were being slightly shafted.

So I did the right thing and spoke/drank with students, held my own during interviews and just being the general smiling bubble that I was known to be. Then Friday happened.

If you haven't been following social media or seen the results show, I lost. Not very surprising. But then Derrick lost. Suddenly the shock factor started to rev up. Soon, bombshell after bombshell was dropped until Jess wasn't re-elected president. What followed was a glorious walk out, multiple expletives and the start of the biggest campaign of this academic year.

You see, there were multiple successful candidates who did things they shouldn't have. This included having their campaign team verbally assault me (I don't particularly like being called a selfish bitch who doesn't give a fuck about international students) because I had the audacity to say that there were multiple manifestos that were better than theirs, had multiple friends being intimidated (some of whom are autistic) and multiple cases of votes being casted on student's behalf without their knowledge.

So what followed was a petition that is currently on 930 signatures, 2 protests and a ground breaking occupation of the SU offices that caused some confusion when we came in smiling and taking selfies.

Occupy DSU Squad

During the weekend, our protests have been covered by the Leicester Mercury and Demon Media.
Not to mention the abundance of support from current students, alumni and officers from other SUs, all of which has been absolutely amazing and makes me proud to be a DMU Student.

The current progress of #NotMyDSU is the following:
  1. After the onslaught of complaints, DSU have launched a brand new investigation into the elections. If you have any evidence please email dsucomms@dmu.ac.uk so that it can be featured in the investigation.
  2. We have enough signatures on our petition to launch a referendum. We will be having an emergency council on the 12th April to finalise the question but it will be along the lines of 'Should we redo the election for all 5 Full Time Officer posts?'. If more people vote yes, then regardless of what happens with the investigation, the election for the full time roles will be reran.

Hopefully now, the next entry I write will be me trying to get back to normal.

Until then folks,
Toodle pips,

Kelly
